Yoga – A Practical Approach

The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit words ‘yuj’ and ‘a’, which means to yoke or to join. Yoga is an ancient Indian science that focuses on the mind, body and spirit. It has been practiced in India for thousands of years.

The first mention of yoga was made by the Vedas, which are sacred Hindu texts written over 5000 years ago. The term yoga is also used to refer to a system of physical postures (asanas) and breathing exercises (pranayamas). The word yoga is not used to refer to the philosophy behind the practice of yoga.

Yoga is practiced in many forms today. There are several different schools of yoga that emphasize different aspects of yoga. These include: Hatha yoga, Iyengar yoga, Ashtanga yoga, Viniyoga, Jnana yoga, Kripalu yoga, Kundalini yoga, Raja yoga, Bikram yoga, Tantra yoga, and Sivananda yoga. Each of these styles of yoga is unique, but all share the same basic principles.

Hatha yoga is the most popular form of yoga. Hatha yoga emphasizes the physical benefits of yoga, such as improved posture, increased flexibility, and weight loss. Hatha yoga consists of a series of yoga poses, known as asanas. These asanas are often performed in conjunction with breathing exercises.

The first step in practicing hatha yoga is to learn the correct way to perform each pose. The second step is to practice the poses. Many people find it helpful to videotape themselves while they practice. This will help them to identify what they are doing wrong. The third step is to modify the poses so that they become more comfortable. The fourth step is to gradually increase the intensity of the poses. The fifth step is to add some new poses to their repertoire.
